60 GHz WLAN kits

Black Box boosts air traffic

Faster and more secure network connections with the new 60 GHz WLAN kits

Hallbergmoos, December 11, 2011 – The Wireless LAN Kits 60 GHz from Black Box, the IT and telecommunications specialist, are available now. With the translation of an EU directive into national law, the frequency band between 59 and 63 GHz can now be used license-free by companies in the DACH region. The new 60 GHz technology allows the wireless connection of two networks at high megabit rates. Unlike FSO/laser links, the weather doesn’t have a significant impact on the transmission quality. Distances of up to 700 meters or more are thus possible without problems.

The Wireless LAN Kits 60 Ghz are complete sets for mast mounting and include two transmit and receive antennas. They are powered via PoE; numerous integrated management features simplify alignment considerably. Similar to the 2.4 GHz spectrum, lengthy installation procedures are therefore unnecessary. This also distinguishes the new solution from the FSO/laser link technology which poses high requirements on installation accuracy: only if the alignment is 100 percent accurate, flawless transmissions are possible – provided the weather is good. Fog and rainfall in particular have a high negative impact on the availability of this technology.

With an effective data throughput of 635 Mbit/s at a range of at least 700 meters, the WLAN Kits 60 GHz achieve an availability of 99.9 percent. “We are happy to be among the first to introduce this new technology into the market,“ says Michael Wüst, Product Manager Networking for Black Box Europe. “It combines the advantages of the currently prevalent standards without showing their weaknesses with regards to installation, speed or weather dependency. Moreover, the new frequency band is not as over-utilized as the old 2.4 and 5 GHz systems.“
