Embedded USB 2.0 Extender

Modular DKM extender from Black Box: one cable – a thousand possibilities

New module makes transmission of single-link DVI-D video, mouse, keyboard, and transparent USB 2.0 over a single CATx cable possible

Hallbergmoos, April 25, 2012 – Black Box, the IT and communications specialist, expands its modular DKM extender with an embedded USB 2.0 interface card. It enables the transparent transmission of USB 2.0 data as well as full HD DVI video (at a resolution of up to 2048x1152), mouse, and keyboard over a single CATx cable and over a distance of up to 140 meters. The transparent tranfer of USB signals makes the extension ideal for the use of touchscreens or USB cams in process controls, control stations and control rooms, in the broadcasting sector (production/broadcast management), and in sophisticated digital signage touch applications.

The DKM Extender series enables the transmission of audio and video signals over distances of up to 10,000 meters (over single-mode cables). The innovative modular housing concept allows clients to have extenders tailor-made according to their individual requirements, with a wide range of housings and peripheral interfaces available. “Thanks to the digital transmission of the video signal, the images are as crisp as if the monitors were directly connected to the workstation,“ Axel Bürger, Managing Director of Black Box Deutschland GmbH, explains. With the new embedded USB 2.0 interface cards, even more possibilities are available now. Besides the USB HID protocol, the extenders now support additional peripherals, from any kind of touchscreens (e.g. Elo APR) or graphics tablets to storage media or webcams. “The new module allows the direct connection of up to two USB 2.0 devices, whose information is transmitted transparently. This makes for a vast range of applications, for example for visualization in the industry, in control rooms, or in digital signage – and all that over only a single CATx or a duplex optical fiber cable.“

The DKM extenders are compatible with all operating systems as well as many KVM switches and can be integrated into most existing infrastructures without problems. With their perfect compatibility to the digital switch matrix ServSwitch DKM FX from Black Box, the extenders can not only be used to extend KVM signals, but also to create a switch matrix with up to 288 ports.
